After route planning has been completed, tracking the execution of those planned routes is a very important part of the daily workflow for many organizations.
Strategic Movements provides two parts of the tracking process. First, it can upload the planned routes to a GPS provider using their application interface. Then, as that provider captures tracking data, Strategic Movements can request that data on a regular basis and update the worker or vehicle position and status on the Dispatch Board.
Let’s look at this process in greater detail.
Before anything can be tracked, there must be a plan for the day.
In Strategic Movements, a manual plan may be created using the Dispatch Board with its drag and drop process, a static plan may be created from a master schedule, or a dynamic plan may be created from uploaded data assigned to routes by the artificial intelligence process.
Once the routes are created, the routes are uploaded to GPS provider. This upload process is built into Strategic Movements using the interface specified by the provider. If we don’t have an interface for your GPS vendor, we will get the specifications and develop it, usually at no charge.
Once the routes are uploaded, the GPS provider gathers and processes the actual tracking data from the GPS devices.
As the day progresses, Strategic Movements requests the latest tracking data using the GPS provider’s interface and places the latest position data on the Dispatch Board’s map. As this is done, the actual arrival and departure times at the stops on the route are updated. Each stop along the route is color coded, so the planner or dispatcher can tell at a glance whether the stop has not been visited, the worker or vehicle is at the stop, or has departed.
Finally, when the day is done, a planned vs actual report can be produced to identify variances that may need to be addressed.
In many cases, the system of record that is used to create service orders or delivery tickets does not have the ability to provide good estimated work times. When this is the case, the actual stop times can be determined by the arrival and departure times. These stop times are used as input into a machine learning process, so future stop times can be estimated from real data, not just arbitrary guesses.

Routes for service technicians are always subject to change during the day. There are times when emergency service is needed. Knowing where all the technicians are currently located combined with a function to find the closest time on a route when the customer can be serviced, yields better service with less guesswork.
Tracking is important and having the tracking data integrated with the planning and assignment tools can simplify the work of the planner or dispatcher.
